A Las Vegas woman was arrested Monday after being charged with stealing more than $51,000 from Iowa City rental properties in April.

Iowa City Police say Nancy Lou Skay, 50, of Las Vegas, Nevada, managed rental properties in Iowa City and collected damage deposits from January 2008 through January 2009.  They say she then deposited $43,366.35 into an account at Hills Bank.

Police say Skay refused to hand over the money when requested and claimed that an Internet hacker took $95,000 out of the account.

Police say a hacker did get into an account, but not the one Skay claimed.  They say she used that as a cover up.

Police say that bank records show that Skay was taking money out of the damage deposit account and transferring it into other accounts.  Police say she then used that money for her personal uses.

Police also say that Skay did not turn over three deposits in December 2008 totaling $8,175.05.

Skay is charged with first degree theft for stealing $51,541.00.

She was released from the Johnson County Jail on her own recognizance.
