Cedar Rapids offers prescription drug discount card

The City of Cedar Rapids is now offering a free prescription discount card.

Residents can get savings of about 20% on commonly prescribed medicines. The card can be used by people without insurance, or on medicines not covered by insurance.

"We're offering this free prescription discount card to help provide Cedar Rapids residents with some relief from the high cost of prescription drugs," said City Manager Jeff Pomeranz in a written statement. "Whether or not an individual has prescription coverage, this program can make it easier for our residents to afford the medications they need to deal with a short-term illness or stay healthy by managing a chronic condition."

The discount cards can be used at pharmacies in Cedar Rapids, or at more than 60,000 participating pharmacies across the county. The program is sponsored by the National League of Cities and administered by CVS Caremark.

The cards are available on the city's website, at the Cedar Rapids Public Library locations at Westdale Mall and at the temporary location of City Hall at 3851 River Ridge Drive NE.

The discount cards will also be placed in utility bills in the coming months.
