In wake of 32 infant deaths, selling drop-side cribs now illegal

A safer place for your baby to sleep. That's the goal of new government crib standards taking effect June 28.

The primary target of the new crib rules: the drop-side crib, a model the Consumer Product Safety Commission says led to at least 32 infant suffocation and strangulation deaths since 2000. Defective or damaged drop-side rails can create a gap with the mattress where a baby could get caught.

The new rules make it illegal to manufacture or sell a drop-side crib, even at a second-hand store or yard sale. Child care centers and hotels will have until December, 2012, to make sure their cribs meet the new standards.

New standards also include:

  • Making crib mattress supports more durable.
  • Stronger crib slats and crib hardware.
  • And more rigorous safety testing of cribs.

CPSC has recalled more than 11 million cribs since 2007. If you've got a crib in your home right now, check their website to make sure it hasn't been recalled.

You should also check cribs frequently to ensure there are no parts missing, broken or loose, and check that all hardware remains tightly secured.
