UPDATE: Power outage impacts downtown Cedar Rapids

Alliant Energy says a cable failure is to blame for Monday's power outage that left more than 2,000 customers in downtown Cedar Rapids in the dark and caused traffic headaches when traffic lights went dark.

Justin Foss, a spokesman for Alliant Energy, says a cable feeding the Cedar Substation failed at around 5:00 p.m. sending high voltage into the system.

To protect customers, crews had to shutdown power to customers fed from that substation.

Mercy Medical Center says the power surge caused some electrical gear to overheat.
The hospital's basement filled with smoke, but there wasn't a fire.

Foss says they were able to transfer some customers to the new downtown substation to get them back on-line.
