Eight year old boy drowns on Apple River

The Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office says an eight year old boy drowned on Sunday at Apple River Canyon State Park.

Julian Alcantar, from Aurora, Illinois, was walking in the Apple River with family at around 4:20 p.m. when he got into an area of deep water.  They say Alcantar was not able to overcome the depth of the water and the strong current and was swept downstream.

Nearly 60 emergency personnel showed up at the river to search for the boy.  His body was pulled from the river at about 10:43 p.m.
