Fire destroys New Hampton Flower Shop

Investigators are still looking into the cause of a fire that burned down a downtown New Hampton flower shop. Someone noticed smoke coming from the Blue Iris around 5:00 Sunday morning. When fire crews arrived, flames were coming from the building.

The owner of the Blue Iris, Julie Winter-Havel could only watch as the business she built from the ground up, burned to the ground.

"I'm just shocked. I think I'm a little devastated. All the memories," said Winter-Havel.

Winter-Havel has owned this business in downtown New Hampton for thirteen years. Despite the blaze she says this will not be end of her business, especially during one of her busiest times of the year.

"I have really great friends and family and we already have a plan in place where I'm going to set up already, if you can believe that, and we're going to be right across the street at the K & W Motor Shop in the front. It will be business as normal on Monday," said Winter Havel.

Fire crews from several surrounding communities came to New Hampton to help battle the blaze. It took a couple of hours to get the blaze under control.

"It appears to be a total loss, but we'll have to see here after a little more time and investigation from the aerial department to see if we're able to peak our heads in and make entry and see exactly what extent the fire was," said Nick Wegner, New Hampton 2nd Assistant Fire Chief.

As for Winter-Havel, she says it will be this tight knit community that will help move her forward.

"It's a fabulous town to work in and have relationships with and there are some of the best people around," said Winter-Havel.

Fire officials say a hair salon and repair shop, which are connected to the Blue Iris, also received smoke and water damage.

A State Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.
