Freedom From Hunger Food Drive kicks off Saturday

The Freedom from Hunger Community Food Challenge kicks off its ninth year on Saturday in Cedar Rapids.

This year's drive starts on June 25 when representatives march in the Freedom Festival parade at 10 a.m. in downtown Cedar Rapids.

Organizers hope to surpass last year's total of 72,535 pounds of food collected for the HACAP Food Reservoir and other area food assistance programs.

You can drop-off non-perishable food items at the Freedom Festival's Office Olympiad on July 1, the pancake breakfast on July 4 or during the Kernels homestand, July 14, 15 and 16 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Nearly 4,300 households in Linn County sought emergency food assistance in May.
