Athletes of the Week: W-SR Softball Seniors

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

It takes a team to win a championship and the Go-Hawks softball team has epitomized just that this season. Lead by 8 seniors who are all currently in the starting lineup is not something you see very often.

"We have 8 of us and knowing that we can all go out there and contribute in different way we are really able to just look forward to this year and show what we can do," said senior Peyton Stensland.

Leading the Go-Hawks out to a 18-4 record and ranked 10th in the state is Abby Foster and her astounding .524 batting average. Foster is also 6-1 in the circle this season but not alone. Coach Whitcher has used a 3-person rotation to keep girls fresh, and at the top is Sarah Biggs who has been nothing short of spectacular posting a 7-2 record and 1.15 ERA, alongside Peyton Stensland and her 5-1 mark. In the box is Taylor Streicher and her .444 batting average, alongside Jordan Westendorf, Katelyn MacDonald, Megan Wheeler, and Shelby Suits the group credits the numerous hours spent in the off season with their coaches.

"Merel Whitcher and Randy Foster have worked with us a lot in the off season and both of them have helped us become what we are." says Jordan Westendorf.

But after an off-season hip surgery coach Whitcher says the girls are beginning to take on that coaching responsibility fueling the future of Go-Hawk softball.  "There the example of how to do it the right way that there is more to it than being in the right spot at the right time, there is a right way to do things and that championship attitude."

And losing in the state tournament last season has only made these Go-Hawk seniors hungry for more.

"We have a lot of tough teams ahead," says Katelyn MacDonald, "but were hoping state bound again this year so that's our main goal right now."
