Iowa Flood Center researchers to study Missouri River flooding

Posted:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Thursday two researchers with the Iowa Flood Center will travel from Hamburg north to Sioux City in an instrumented aircraft, taking high-resolution aerial pictures and documenting the extent of flooding on the Missouri River.

The researchers will also capture the river's velocity and motion.

The information learned can help in creating more accurate flood maps, which in turn helps Iowans to know what to expect during future flooding.

"This information we'll use to better understand the behavior of the river during high flows, and improve our models and our predictive capabilities," said Nathan Young, Iowa Flood Center associate director.

The University of Iowa's Operator Performance Laboratory is providing the aircraft and pilot for the researchers.

The Iowa Flood Center offers a number of interactive, user-friendly maps online at www.iowafloodcenter.org
