PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (KWWL) -

To help cut costs to taxpayers, inmates housed in the Crawford County Jail will begin washing the linens that they use in the jail.

Sheriff Dale McCullick says towels, washcloths, sheets and pillow cases are being cleaned professionally right now, but starting in July, they'll be cleaned in-house. Sheriff McCullick says there will be an initial startup cost to buy the linens, but he says the jail should make the money back in a few months. The jail already has the equipment needed.

It's costing between $500 and $700 a month to send the linens out for cleaning. Sheriff McCullick says the initial startup cost to buy the linens was $1,442.00.

"It's nice to save a little money and not cut any services," Sheriff McCullick said in a written statement. "All of us at the Department realize how serious the current economic situation is and we are all looking for ways to save money without cutting services."
