State prepares for new boating alcohol limit

Boaters hitting the Iowa waterways during the July 4th holiday will get the first taste of the new alcohol limits.

The state's new blood alcohol limit for boating of .08% goes into effect on July 1. The previous limit was .10%, but lawmakers wanted to make it the same as it is for the state's roads and highways.

Susan Stocker, the boating law administrator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says the lower limit will hopefully result in fewer boating crashes and deaths.

There were five boating deaths in 2010 and three were alcohol related.
