CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Governor Terry Branstad has ordered flags be flown at half staff Tuesday for a World War II airman.

22-year-old Staff Sgt.. Marvin J. "Steiney" Steinford of Keystone served aboard a B-17 "Flying Fortress" when it was hit by enemy fire on a bombing mission to Berlin, Germany on March 24, 1945. The plane went down over Hungary.

Steinford's remains were found on November 16, 2004 by Hungarian authorities as they were relocating a Soviet memorial. It took several years of negotiations between all countries to allow officials to move the remains.

Memorial services for Staff Sgt. Steinford will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids.

Flags are ordered flown at half staff Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.
