Success is all in the family for Columbus' Goerdt

Baseball is a family affair for Columbus first baseman Michael Goerdt. Michael's father Terry is his head coach while his brother Casey is an assistant for the Sailors.

"Just growing up around sports, they've really been pushing me and helping me to be a better player in everything I do, and they've always been encouraging me," said Goerdt, "Having them out here helping me everyday makes me that much a better player."

As far as performance, this season Michael's leading the Sailors with 4 home runs and 18 RBI's, but baseball isn't the only arena where the senior excels. As a goaltender he helped the Columbus soccer team reach the state tournament for the first time in 4 years.

"Just making it there for us seniors this year and for everyone on the team was a great accomplishment,"said the Sailor senior, "Getting back there felt like we were home again."

He may be even better on the tennis court as a 4 time state doubles qualifier. He and sophomore Alex Bernt teamed up to win the last 2 state championships.

"No one really knows how hard we worked day in and day out we went down to the tennis courts, and on rainy days we were able to go inside the Black Hawk tennis club and just working on our volleys, working on the small stuff, and in the end we were able to put it together 2 years in a row, and it worked out for us."

As for his success, he attributes a lot of it to Casey. Just 2 years apart in age the Goerdt brothers had quite a rivalry growing up.

"I was always striving to be better than him, since that was what I strived to do, it made him a better player, because he didn't want to have his younger brother be better than him, so we had our own little sibling rivalry and it pushed us to be better players."

"They're brothers," added Terry Goerdt, "so when things are going good, they get along, and when things are not going good sometimes it's a little bit of a struggle."

As for which of the 2 is better, according to Michael, the jury's still out. "No comment on that one."
