The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says a bathroom break led to the discovery of a garage fire on Wednesday morning.
Greg Buelow, public information officer for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, says Mike Greenland, 53, discovered the fire in the detached garage at his parents home at 5521 Plainview Drive NW just before 11:00 a.m. when he took the dog outside for a break.
When Greenland opened the walk-in door to the garage, he discovered fire around the refrigerator. Firefighters were able to contain the fire damage to a corner of the garage. The refrigerator was destroyed and there was some fire damage to a roof panel and side panel of the garage.
A car was removed from the garage but did sustain some smoke damage.
Buelow says an investigation shows that the fire was caused by the failure of an extension cord that the refrigerator was plugged into.
The house was not damaged and no injuries were reported.
Buelow says extension cords should only be used to temporarily power electrical devices. It is recommended that appliances be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
