Clean Line Energy looking for input for future route of power lines

Posted:
LA PORTE CITY (KWWL) -

The rural eastern Iowa skyline could soon get a new addition. Clean Line Energy Partners is looking for a route through eastern Iowa to put its 500 mile long, over head, high voltage, transmission line.

The lines would take the power generated from western Iowa's wind farms and bring it to Illinois and other states out east.

More than a hundred people showed up to Clean Line Energy Partners open house in La Porte City. With maps and number of Clean Line employees, people went around the room asking questions and giving advice.

"We want to get people's input on areas of great importance to the community. It could be like here's a local Girl Scout camp or here's a pioneer cemetery or something like that so we want to get all of that input for the best possible way to route the line," said Hans Detweiler, Director of Development for Clean Line Energy Partners.

"It will be running in my area, but I don't think it will be near my place," David Currell of Dysart.

Currell owns land in the area where the proposed power lines could go. He says he's in favor of the lines and the wind farms that produce the energy.

"You got to get rid of that electricity their generating with wind chargers. You can't store electricity, it's got to be used right away," said Currell.

While Iowa will be producing the energy, it won't stay in the state. The lines are made to go east, over the Mississippi River and into Illinois.

"It's allowing the state to develop those export products and send them out of state in the same way that corn and soybeans. Nobody in Iowa would want or expect all of the corn and soybeans grown in the state to be used in the state. They expect it to be exported," said Detweiler.

The cost of this project is estimated at $1.7 billion.
