Nationally recognized UI law professor dies

University of Iowa law professor David Baldus has died at the age of 75.

Susan Spilger with the Lenser Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City says Baldus died at his Iowa City home on Monday.

Baldus had taught criminal law, anti-discrimination law, capital punishment and federal criminal law since 1969.

Baldus was recognized nationally as an authority on the death penalty, and worked to illustrate what he believed were inequalities and discrimination regarding the death penalty.

Baldus had been suffering from colon cancer, but he was still working on research until just a few weeks ago.
