SUV destroyed in overnight fire in Waterloo

"Wow, you know, that was supposed to be my car next year," Jose Rivas said after being woken up around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The Rivas' SUV burst into flames outside their home on Jefferson St. near downtown Waterloo.

The fire started in the engine and got out of control fast.  Firefighters arrived within minutes to put it out.  Nobody was hurt in the fire but the vehicle was destroyed.

The Rivas' said the last time they drove the vehicle was Monday afternoon to get groceries.  They said they didn't notice anything wrong at the time but had a rude awakening about 12 hours later.

"When I saw the car, I was like, how could it happen you know? I was like, Mom what happened to the car? She just woke me up like I just went to sleep a half hour ago. I didn't even notice anything," Jose Rivas said.

Rivas was just learning to drive in the SUV.  He's 15 now but had been looking forward to taking this SUV out for drives after turning 16 in February.

While it's not clear exactly what caused this fire, some models of the 2007 Ford Expedition did have a recall on a fuel hose, which may contain weak areas.  The hose could crack and if there's a spark, could ignite into a fire.
