Gas for Guns is a success for Waterloo police

Waterloo Police are calling the Gas for Guns program a success. They collected around three dozen handguns, rifles, and shotguns at the event Saturday morning, and had to wrap up after just one hour.

It created a busy afternoon at Jim Lind Shell in Waterloo. People who turned in their guns received $100 to $150 in gas gift cards donated by Lind. He said, it's nice to have the business. But that's not the point of the Gas for Guns program.

"The main concern was to get the unwanted guns off the street, if you will. I hear they got a sawed-off shotgun with a pistol grip. Those are the types of Saturday night specials that don't need to be on the street," said Lind.

Lind plans to continue the program in the future, with the cooperation of WPD. Next time, he said he'll donate more money so police can collect more guns.
