Boone couple claims $1 million Powerball ticket

A Boone couple claimed a $1 million Powerball prize Wednesday.  They said they told some white lies over the past few weeks about whether they were the big lottery winners.

Mary Tillman, her husband, Chad; her oldest daughter Killashandra, 14; and she and Chad's daughters, Maryjane, 6; and Laurlien, 9 months; all went to lottery headquarters together to claim the prize. Mary Tillman said she and Chad had realized shortly after the April 30 Powerball drawing that they'd won a big prize, but they wanted to take the time to do some financial planning before coming forward to claim it. So with that in mind, they didn't tell the girls about their good fortune until a few days ago.

"We didn't let them know about the winnings until after school was out for the year," said Chad Tillman, who works at a Fareway warehouse in Boone. The Tillmans' prize is the fifth won by Iowa Lottery players of at least $1 million this year.

Mary Tillman purchased their $1 million-winning ticket at Casey's, 1127 Story St. in Boone, for the Powerball drawing on April 30. It was one of two tickets nationwide to win a $1 million prize that night. The other was purchased in Ohio.

It also was the second Powerball ticket in two months to win a $1 million prize in Iowa. Eric Shaffer of Marion won a $1 million Powerball prize with a ticket he purchased at a Cedar Rapids convenience store for the March 9 drawing.

Mary Tillman, a stay-at-home mom, said her mother-in-law called her shortly after the drawing to see if she'd checked their ticket yet. Mary said she had played numbers based on family ages and birthdays, so when she began to review the numbers, they jumped right out at her.

"I said, 'Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! It was me!'" she said.

The Tillmans' ticket originally matched the first five numbers but missed the Powerball to win a $200,000 prize. But Mary also had added the Power Play® option to the winning play, which multiplied the prize to $1 million.

Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said it's always fun to see another instant millionaire in Iowa.

"The Power Play feature is definitely delivering big winners here in Iowa," Rich said.

If your ticket matches the first five numbers in a Powerball drawing and you've added the Power Play, the prize you'll win is always $1 million, no matter what the Power Play number is for that drawing.

The winning numbers in the April 30 Powerball drawing were: 6-13-15-32-41 and Powerball 3. The Power Play number was 2.

Since the Iowa Lottery's start in 1985, its players have won more than $2.7 billion in prizes while the lottery has raised more than $1.3 billion for state programs. Today, lottery proceeds in Iowa have three main purposes: They provide support for veterans, help for a variety of significant projects through the state General Fund, and backing for the Vision Iowa program, which was implemented to create tourism destinations and community attractions in the state and build and repair schools.
