Alliant Energy will cycle air conditioners for customers living north of I-80 on Monday due to the heat.
Between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., those enrolled in the Appliance Cycling Program, will have their air conditioner cycled in 15 minute intervals to reduce energy consumption.
Customers enrolled in the program have a small control switch placed on or near their central air conditioner. Alliant sends a signal to the switch which turns the unit on and off every 15 minutes. The fan continues to run, circulating the cooler, drier air in the home. Customers are paid eight dollars a month from June through September for participating in the program whether the air conditioner is cycled or not.
There is a similar program for electric water heaters which is also in place on Monday. Customers are paid $2 a month for participating in that program.
The program is not initiated on weekends.
This is the first cycling event in Iowa this year.
