Jobless rate looking good in Bremer County

While unemployment numbers rise in other parts of the country, it's a different story locally. In Bremer County the jobless rate is at 4.7 percent, the lowest in Eastern Iowa.

From amusement park rides to large wind turbines, would you believe some of the parts used in this equipment are made in Waverly?

"If you look at a rotating sign it has to power the sign through a rotating union and we make those parts," said Kent Davis, Design Engineer.

It's companies like United Equipment Accessories in Waverly that is helping the economic rate in Bremer County.

"You have companies here that have created a culture where people want to work. When you're seeing over and over again second and third generation families that are working, that tells you a lot they care about their employees and care about their community," said Debi Durham, State Economic Development Director.

State Economic Development Director Debi Durham caught wind of Bremer county's success. She says although the jobless rate is high nationwide, there are jobs in Iowa. The question is how to promote it.

"This thing is we have jobs in Iowa. We were talking today there are jobs in the companies and there are about 75 openings at skilled high school set at the facilities we toured today. The question is how do we communicate that to the country of those needing jobs if there's not an opportunity in there community and state," said Durham.
