The lumberyard in Fredericksburg caught fire shortly before midnight Thursday.

The Chickasaw County Sheriff's Department says people started calling 911 at 11:51 p.m. to report a fire at the downtown facility.

Large flames filled the skyline over the community for about an hour.  Firefighters from Fredericksburg, New Hampton, Lawler and Frederika had to cut through the sides of the metal building to get access to the flames.  Piles of charred lumber sat smoldering outside the lumberyard in the early morning hours of Friday.

Ray Armbrecht, the Fredericksburg Fire Chief, says they were paged to a vehicle fire at 11:51 p.m. and then to the lumberyard fire at 11:53 p.m.  He does not know if one started the other, but says two members of the state fire marshal's office are on scene investigating the cause.  He adds that a cause may never be known.

"When we come out of the house the sky was all orange over to the east so I don't know.  Lumberyard was on fire and the pickup over here was on fire and about looked like the sun coming up," Fredericksburg resident Craig Westendorf said.

Armbrecht says one of his firefighters was taken to the hospital and was treated and released.  He says he most likely suffered from exhaustion.

Armbrecht adds that three-quarters of the lumberyard was lost and the owner had just re-stocked because he had several big jobs coming up.

Power had to be cut to part of town and Highway 18 was shut down until about 4:00 a.m.
