Girls State tennis returns to Waterloo

The next three days Waterloo is hosting the 1A Girls State Tennis tournament.

The Waterloo Columbus doubles team of Lindsay Mcgonegle and Lindsay McManus, who didn't win a match in the regular season, are huge underdogs against second seeded team from Spirit Lake/Okoboji.

The two teams split the first two sets and the Sailors win a huge point on this service winner by McManus to get to match point leading 6-5 in the third and decisive set.

On match point Mcgonegle puts away the volley winner and the Columbus doubles team of the Lindsays pull off a shocker to advance to Friday's semifinals.

Also advancing to the state doubles semifinal round is the unseeded Aplington-Parkersburg team of Whitney Schipper and Ashley Dohlman. They crushed the fourth seeded doubles team from Holy Trinity 6-1, 7-5 in straight sets.

And advancing to the semifinals in singles--- top seeded and two time defending state champion Sarah Dalton and second seeded Celia Morton both of Dubuque Wahlert. Dalton won her two matches 6-love, 6-love and 6-1, 6-love.
