Twenty-nine-year-old Li Na of China defeated Maria Sharapova of Russia, 6-4, 7-5, on Thursday afternoon to become the first Chinese player to reach the final of the French Open.

The loss means Sharapova will have to wait another year to score a career grand slam with victories in all four major championships.

Li, seeded sixth, hit 23 winners, and Sharapova, seeded seventh, hit 24 unforced errors. A double fault on match point, her 10th of the match, sealed Sharapova's loss.

Li's victory moves her to fifth in the world among women's players. A victory in Saturday's final would move her to fourth place, the highest ranking by a Chinese.
