New technique can spot brain damage MRI can't

A new imaging technique can spot traumatic injuries in soldiers' brains that are not detected on conventional MRI scans.

Scientists from Washington University's School of Medicine and the military studied 84 soldiers who were exposed to explosive blasts.

They underwent regular MRI scans, and a new scan called diffusion tensor imaging.

This scan can detect changes to the white matter in the brain and illustrates whether the brain's wiring system has been affected.

Researchers hope, one day, this imaging test can be used as a diagnostic tool for traumatic brain injury.
