Iowa's Treasurer claims Branstad misleading public on budget

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Iowa is fiscally sound - that's the message from Iowa's State Treasurer.

He visited Waterloo Wednesday, countering the claims by Governor Terry Branstad that the state has a fiscal mess to clean up.

"The governor's been really misleading Iowans. The state of Iowa does not have a deficit, the state of Iowa is not going off the cliff financially. As a matter of fact, we're in great shape. We'll close the books in June, and we'll have a balance budget, and we'll have a billion dollar surplus," Treasurer Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald pointed to a balance budget, ample reserve funds, an a triple "A" credit rating as indicators to back his claims.

State Senators Jeff Danielson of Cedar Falls and Bill Dotzler of Waterloo, along with State Representative Bob Kressig from Cedar Falls joined him at a news conference at the Waterloo Public Library.
