Retail sales showing positive economic growth

New data from MasterCard show consumers spent less on home products like furniture in May as the housing market continued to slump.  But clothing and luxury items fared better.

MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse reports furniture sales fell 3.2 percent in May.  Home furnishings sales fell 1.4 percent, appliances sales fell 4.4 percent and electronics sales fell 3.6 percent.

Other sectors performed better.  Clothing sales rose 5.9 percent and luxury sales rose 4.7 percent.  Jewelry sales also saw a nice increase, jumping 7.6 percent, boosted by gift purchases for Mother's Day and graduations.

Online sales continued their robust growth, rising 15.9 percent.
