Des Moines hospital won't hire smokers

An expansion of a smoke-free workplace includes a tobacco-free hiring policy at a Des Moines hospital.

Mercy Medical Center will no longer hire smokers and will test applicants for nicotine as part of a its drug testing.

The hospital said it wants employees to emulate the same healthy behaviors it encourages from its patients.

The policy does not impact current employees. It takes effect on July 1.

The human resources director said the policy is not discriminatory.  He said that smokers are not in a ‘protected class'.
