Child playing with lighter starts basement fire

A child playing with a lighter is to blame for a house fire that sent one person to the hospital. Cedar Rapids fire crews were called to 1658 32nd Street NE at 8:51 p.m. Tuesday. Smoke was seen coming from a side door when they arrived at the one-story structure.

The fire was coming from the basement. Crews said the stairs to the basement and some combustibles downstairs were smoldering. A water pipe had broken in the basement too, filling the area with several inches of water.

Four people got out of the home. 35-year-old Laurie Smith, was taken to a hospital for possible smoke inhalation. The other people in the home were Smith's children. Officials say a 7-year-old girl was playing with a lighter in the basement, starting the fire.
