New district court judge picked in Waterloo

Governor Terry Branstad appointed a new Waterloo-based district court judge in the 1st District. Andrea Dryer has been serving as an assistant public defender in Black Hawk County since 2004. She was an assistant Buchanan County Attorney before that. Dryer will fill the spot left open by Bruce Zager, who was appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court earlier this year. She says being both a prosecutor and public defender has prepared her well to be a judge.

"You learn to see people as individuals and situations as individual situations rather than passing judgements on people according to putting them into certain categories or making judgements that way," said Dryer.

She says she's not sure when she'll be sworn in.
