Law enforcement gear up for busy travel weekend

JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) -

Ruben Cantu of Algona and his family are traveling to Bettendorf for a special graduation, in spite of high gas prices.

"It's expensive, but it's worth it to go see my grandson," Cantu said.

As millions hit the roads this weekend, the Iowa State patrol will be out in full force to help handle the increase in traffic volume.

"We try to have extra people out and be visible on the interstates and the highways for anything that might come up." said Sgt. Sharon Kurt with the Iowa State Patrol.

Drivers can expect to hit some construction, especially on Interstate 80.  Patrolling these construction zones has been a priority for state troopers.  Law enforcement is asking drivers to take it slowly, especially where there is orange.

"Watch your speed, watch your following distance to the car ahead of you.  Just common sense tips that people should keep in mind," Kurt said.
