Cedar Rapids considers charter school

A group of parents and teachers in Cedar Rapids will talk about the possibility of creating a charter school in the city.

"Right now its just an idea," said Gretchen Price, a Cedar Rapids native, "but the proposed school would be located right here in the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids."

Price earned her masters in teaching in the Big Apple, and a PhD at the University of Iowa. She settled in Marion and says she's ready to revamp education in her hometown.

Price said, "I've looked into charter schools, done a ton of research on them, and a lot of research on the laws in Iowa, and thought this could really be something that would help us rethink the way we do education."

Price and a group of parents and other teachers want to create what's called "The Downtown School". The year-round program would focus on technology, the sciences and the arts.

"We're proposing possibly working out of the Gazette building which right now is across the street from the art museum, across the street from Green Square Park, kitty corner from where the new public library will be. Kids will have a wonderful opportunity to really reach out into the community."

Funds for the "Downtown School" would come from community support and education grants from the state.

"We're really reaching out to the community and asking for feedback on what we're doing. Is this something you're interested in?"

The 8 educators involved in this project will host a public forum Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Kliks Photography in downtown Cedar Rapids. They really want to take the temperature of the community and see what kind of support this type of project would have.
