Census shows fewer young workers in Iowa

The latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows the number of young Iowa workers is on the decline and experts say that will create challenges for the state as it tries to climb out of the recession.

The new census figures released show the number of Iowans between ages 25 and 44 declined 7.65 percent statewide from 2002 to 2010.  At the same time, the number of Iowans 45 to 64 increased 25 percent.

Iowa State University Economist Liesl Eathington says the combination of the two reduces the number of available workers in Iowa and could make it difficult to attract new industry to the state.

Experts say the decline is part of the long-standing trend of young workers leaving the state.
