Documentary showcases life of Bishop Loras

More than 300 people pack a Dubuque theater Wednesday night for the premiere of a documentary honoring a Catholic leader in Eastern Iowa.

''Man of Deeds'' tells the story of Bishop Mathais Loras. The documentary was produced by Loras College professor Craig Schaefer. It tells the story of the bishop who traveled from Lyon, France, during the French Revolution, to the United States. The project took three years to complete but Schaefer says it's been fascinating to learn about the man.

"The idea is to tell a pretty amazing story that not many people knew a lot about. So especially here in Eastern Iowa. The development of the Catholic church in Iowa. And that's really been fascinating is the development of this man and how he came to represent the church in Eastern Iowa," Schaefer said.

Schaefer had a lot of help along the way. Ted Rosean also worked closely with him. The two traveled to Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans and Lyons, France. The film was funded thanks to several grants and community support. Free copies of the film were given at the premiere. Copies are also on sale.
