Distracted driving causes three car crash near Tama

A crash that involved three vehicles serves as a reminder to eliminate distractions if you're hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend.

The accident happened on Highway 30 near Tama just before 9:00 am on Wednesday.  It tied up traffic for about two hours.

The state patrol says an eastbound car drifted across the center line.   It clipped two cars headed west, towards Tama.

"There wasn't any serious injuries.  Everyone that was injured ended up leaving in ambulance, no air care was needed.  Basically, I think everyone is going to be fine out of this crash, but it is a distracted driving case," said Trooper Bob Conrad of the Iowa State Patrol.

Conrad said the driver looked down to adjust the vehicle's windshield wipers before crossing into oncoming traffic.

"Just because it wasn't a cell phone, doesn't mean it still is not a distraction doing something else in the car." said Conrad.

"With Memorial weekend coming up, this should just wake some people up and say listen, its gonna happen, it happened to somebody today.  These three motorists left home, didn't think they were going to be in a crash.  It always happens to somebody. Don't have the attitude it will never happen to you. Pay attention to what you're doing!"
