Zach Johnson gives back to Cedar Rapids schools

A Cedar Rapids elementary school started the day with a surprise visit from golfer Zach Johnson. Johnson announced that his foundation will invest over $1 million in two of his hometown's elementary schools.

The pilot program, which will start during the 2011-2012 school year, is called Kids on Course.

The goal is to give students at Harrison and Van Buren the chance to reach their academic potential. Johnson also hopes the funds will provide an opportunity for the kids to have some much deserved fun. The exact details of the project are still in the planning stages.

During his speech, Johnson reflected on his childhood in Cedar Rapids.

"I can remember as a kid, you know, going to school, having help with my homework.  I played sports, arts, music.  I had all that stuff.   Now that I'm a parent, it's a parent thing! Every kid should have that opportunity," said Johnson. "Golf is great, but my most important roles are as husband, father and philanthropist."

Kids on Course is a pilot program developed by the Board of the Zach Johnson Foundation in cooperation with the United Way of East central Iowa and the Cedar Rapids Community School District.
