Black Hawk Co. road caves in

A Black Hawk County road is closed after part of it caved in. Part of Schrock Road fell in over the weekend leaving a crater about 10 to 12 feet deep. The county closed the road between Kimball Avenue and Highway 21 south of Waterloo Saturday. Work will begin Tuesday to repair it. The county engineer says it appears the approach to a small bridge had scoured out over the years and undermined the road from beneath. They were alerted to it Thursday.

"We went out and looked at it. There was a depression. We placed some asphalt in it and then most likely we got heavy rains Friday or Saturday and they caused more material to be carried away causing the void to get larger and the roadway to collapse," said Black Hawk Co. Engineer Cathy Nicholas.

Repairs should take a couple of days. The bridge was going to be replaced anyway in two years.
