New POW/MIA monument in Waterloo

In honor of Prisoners of War and those Missing In Action, this is the newest monument at Waterloo's Soldiers and Sailors Park.

The local Rolling Thunder Chapter has worked on the project for about eight years.

"In 2002, we were approached by the Veterans Hall Commission to institute this monument. The fundraising started in 2005. Through sponsors, including A-Line Iron and Metal, Kyle Stone, we were lucky enough to have sponsors to raise more than $15,000," said Tom "Robby" Robinson.

A dedication is set for Memorial Day, following the annual parade at 10:30 and ceremony at 11 a.m. The monument dedication should be around 11:45.

"For Rolling Thunder, our mission is POW and MIA. We feel it's our job to promote awareness. The other part is to help veterans of all wars," said Robinson.

Rolling Thunder and A-Line Iron and Metal collected more than 180,000 pounds of scrap metal to help pay for the monument. But the project isn't finished just yet.

"The next step is put in cement and we're hoping next week come down and do that. Brick work during the summer. All donors have a brick. By veterans day everything should be finalized," said Robinson.

The monument includes a list of POWs and MIAs from all wars. There's also space to add more, if necessary.

Robinson said it was a long road getting to this point, but he's very happy with how the monument turned out.

"Absolutely. It's beautiful," said Robinson.
