UPDATE: Suspicious powder forces evacuation in Iowa City

A scare at an Iowa City business forced an evacuation on the Iowa City Ped Mall Thursday afternoon.

Employees on the third floor of an office building were exposed to a white powder after opening an envelope. Those workers were checked out, but medical personnel say they showed no problematic symptoms. The building was evacuated as a precaution.

With the assistance of the United States Postal Inspection Service, authorities determined the powder was consistent with a mint candy. The candy accompanied a letter from an insurance company advertising life insurance.  The candy was crushed when the letter went through automation at the post office.

Several letters were sent out by the insurance agency and investigators are attempting to make contact with potential recipients. No criminal charges will be filed, but cost for the emergency response is yet to be determined.
