UPDATE: Sumner soldier injured in Afghanistan

An Iowa soldier from eastern Iowa is recovering after being injured by a bomb in Afghanistan.

Specialist Zach Schick of Sumner was injured by a bomb while on foot patrol. His family members learned of his injuries Tuesday. Specialist Schick and three other members of his unit were wounded by shrapnel.

His father, Curt Schick, says his son is improving. Friday morning, Specialist Schick was taken off a breathing tube at a hospital in Germany. Doctors are hopeful he can be moved out of intensive care sometime Friday afternoon, and transferred to Walter Reed as early as Sunday.

Zach's parents have been updating friends and family about his condition through Facebook.

The United States Army will not comment on Schick's injuries, citing HIPPA confidentially laws. However, the do confirm Specialist Schick is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke. This unit is currently deployed to Afghanistan.
