UPDATE: One killed in three separate accidents on Highway 218

The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Deputies responded to three accidents in about 5 hours on Highway 218 on Tuesday.

Around 12:30 p.m., deputies say 23-year-old Jennifer Czachura was changing the radio station in her car when she went off onto the right shoulder of the road and then over-corrected and collided with Maria Carillo's car. Both cars ended up in the median near Highway 218 and West Cedar Wapsi Road. Carillo had minor injuries. Czachura was charged with failure to have control of her vehicle.

While cleaning up the first accident, a second accident happened about a quarter mile south on Highway 218 around 1 p.m. The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office says 69-year-old Clifford Malone was driving too fast for the slow moving traffic caused by the previous accident. Clifford rear-ended a car driven by 72-year-old James Patten of Jesup. Patten's car rear-ended a car driven by 28-year-old Bridget Destival of Readlyn. Destival's car rolled into the ditch and then Patten's car rear-ended a car driven by 28-year-old Erin Hellman of Waverly. Malone and his passenger were not injured. Destival was taken to the hospital for observation. James Patten died at the scene.

Malone was charged with failure to stop in the assured clear distance ahead.

A third crash happened around 3:20 in the southbound lanes on Highway 218 just north of W. Cedar Wapsi Road. Traffic was moving slowly because of being rerouted onto West Cedar Wapsi Road after the previous accident. Deputies say 68-year-old Kenneth Smith changed lanes to avoid an accident and hit a car driven by 19-year-old Brittany McNab. McNab had also changed lanes to avoid an accident. No charges were filed in the accident.

A section of Highway 218 was closed for three hours as emergency crews handled the multiple accidents.
