Train speeds increasing in Bellevue

Trains traveling through Bellevue will be moving faster starting next week.

Canadian Pacific Railway announced Monday that trains traveling through Bellevue will move at 20 m.p.h. beginning May 23.

Canadian Pacific says the speed increase will improve traffic flow at railroad crossings.

Drivers are required to yield to trains approaching or occupying railroad crossings at streets and highways.

Here are some safety tips from Canadian Pacific:

- Always be prepared to stop when approaching train tracks.

- Do not attempt to drive around the crossing gates if they have been lowered.

- It takes 1 to 1.5 miles for a train to come to a stop after the brakes are applied.

- If your car stalls on the tracks, get out, move off the tracks and call 911.
