Gooris repeats as MVC decathlon champion

The UNI Panther men sit in 4th place after 2 days at the Missouri Valley track championships.  Decathlete Daniel Gooris provided Saturday's big highlight for UNI.

Gooris sat in 5th place after the first day's event, but strong performances vaulted him into second with only the javelin and 1,500 meters remaining.  The Panther junior finished second with a throw of 174 feet, 9 inches in the javelin which vaulted him into first overall.  A second place finish in the 1,500 was good enough for the event championship.

After suffering an injury early in the season, Gooris said the win was even more gratifying.

"Indoors, 2 weeks before the conference meet, I twisted my ankle," said Gooris,"It just wasn't there, so just being able to come back and be at my top again feels really good."

Justin Romero provided another boost for UNI with a second place finish in the shot put.  Competition wraps up Sunday afternoon.
