"Biggest Loser" winner graduates from U of I

When Matt Hoover enrolled at the University of Iowa, dropping out was not part of the plan.

"I signed to wrestle for Dan Gable," said Hoover. "I spent four years and then I had a mental breakdown. I just left school."

Hoover came back now and then, but he never stayed for long. Years later, he became nationally-recognized as a participant (and then winner) of the weight-loss show "The Biggest Loser".

"After the show was over, I was like ‘I've gotta finish this," said Hoover. "So, I took 14 hours this semester and stuck after it."

After the show, Hoover became a life coach. Hoover traveled the country with his wife and helped other families learn to live healthy lifestyles.

16 years after starting school, Hoover now holds a degree in psychology. He hopes it will enable him to keep changing how people feel about themselves, for the better.

"It's a big thing, you know," says Hoover's wife, Suzy. "Taking that long to accomplish that. It's a good example for our boys, just to say ‘finish what you start.' I'm very proud of him."

"It's not too late to go back and get the job done," said Hoover. "You know, an education is not something that expires. It took a lot longer for me, but I'm just excited to have it done."
