North Tama excels in academics & athletics

North Tama High School students spend their time not only in class, but also in numerous extra curricular activities.

"We have a great group of kids.  Almost 90 percent of our kids involved in some type of extra curricular activities," said Irvin Laube, secondary principal/athletic director.

Kevin Darrow, academic decathlon coach, said his team placed first this year in their division with their project on the Great Depression.  This was the fourth consecutive year the team won their division.  Placing first qualified them for Nationals where the placed fifth.

Athletically the Redhawks had a state championship season.  In football, North Tama beat Madrid 43 to 34 to win the title game. Head football coach Brent Thoren says they hope to repeat it next year.

"I am anticipating a great season out of these young kids.  We has a great senior class graduate, but the sky's the limit for these kids that are coming up right now," said Thoren.

Thursday night also looked to be a success as the boys and girls track teams participated in the district track meet at Grundy Center.  The boys shuttle hurdle relay team, long jump, and high jump qualified as well as the high jump for the girls team. They will run at the state meet in Des Moines starting on Thursday.
