Suspected tornado hits Lenox

The town of Lenox is cleaning up Thursday after two tornadoes touched down Tuesday night.

The storm ripped off roofs, shattered windows and tore apart trees, but no serious injuries were reported.

People in town say that houses that used to be two stories are now less than one story.

The National Weather Service sent a team to Lenox on Thursday to confirm the tornado reports and assess the storms' strength.

Governor Terry Branstad has issued a disaster emergency proclamation for Taylor County as a result of the tornadoes.

The governor's proclamation allows state resources to be utilized to respond to and recover from the effects of this storm. Resources will be used to help remove debris in and around the town of Lenox.  The Iowa Department of Transportation is providing trucks, front-end loaders and chippers. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has sent personnel to assist with debris management and removal.

In northwest Iowa, spotters reported twisters near Ashton, Sibley and Lyon.
