CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The City of Cedar Rapids awarded the contract for the their new automated garbage collection program at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

The city will buy 40,000 GARBY carts from Los Angeles, California based Rehrig Pacific Company.  The company will distribute the 35-gallon carts to residents throughout July, August and September.

The carts, which are three-feet high, will be light gray with a black lid and will have the city logo on the side.  The opening in the cart is 23 inches by 20 inches.  The wheels and lid are attached to the cart, just like on the CURBY and YARDY carts.

The Cedar Rapids Solid Waste & Recycling Division will host three open houses in June to answer any questions about the new program.
