Gov. Branstad denies commutation applications

Posted:

Gov. Terry Branstad has denied applications by four inmates to have their prison sentences commuted, a move that would make them eligible for parole.

Branstad's office says the applications from Jimmy Allen, Justin Davidson, Robert Odem and Mark Smith were all denied on Monday.

Allen is serving a life sentence for a 1982 Polk County. Davidson is serving a 10-year sentence for second-degree robbery in Warren County in 2006.  Smith was sentenced to life in prison in Scott County for a murder in 1986.  Odem is serving a life sentence on two counts of murder in 1980 in Floyd County.

Branstad's office gave no reason for the denial of the applications.
