FEMA wants millions back from disaster victims

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) paid thousands of Americans millions of dollars in natural disaster relief and now wants it back. It claims that some who received money were not eligible.

FEMA is required by law to recover improperly spent money. But the problem is that many of the people already spent the money.

Federal documents show that FEMA is trying to recover $22 million.

The agency claims that more than 5,000 people since 2005 were improperly given money.

This impacts victims of all kinds of disasters including people who suffered through Hurricane Katrina.
