Contest winners get visit from Digital Bus

A big day for Aplington-Parkersburg and Cedar Falls students Monday. The Digital Bus gave students a chance to tour the bus and learn about C-SPAN's public affairs programming. The bus came because of the camera work of a few students.

Junior Matthew Wicks of Parkersburg won first prize in C-Span's StudentCam 2011 competition. StudentCam is an annual documentary competition that encourages students to create short films about political and public policy matters. His video, After the Storm is a documentary is about the EF-5 tornado that hit the area in May of 2008. It won him a $3,000 prize.

Matthew said, "I heard a lot of good things about my interview, my documentary from some people. I was like this a long shot but it would be kind of neat to win, get the call. I was pretty excited."

Wicks shot his winning documentary entirely on a flip cam. He plans to use the money for college and even donate some to "Neighbors Across the Land," a charity that helps victims of natural disasters.

The bus also stopped at Cedar Falls High School. 3 students there were recognized for their 2nd place finish. Sara Gabriele, Jarek Bakken and Daniel Yehieli won $1,500 for their video, The Price Tag of the American Dream.
